Our Story
Hi, I’m Steph. The owner of The Good Opal co! Whilst The Good Opal Company was founded in 2020, the pursuit of this dream has been a long time coming.
Humble beginnings
Growing up in Victoria, I spent my childhood collecting rocks and magazines, obsessed with gems and fossils by in large because of Jurassic Park. But it wasn’t until 2014, when my neighbour gifted me a jar of Lightning Ridge white opal chips, that my obsession with opals truly began.
That first jar led to fossicking trips to Lightning Ridge, where I discovered the magic of black opal. Over the years, I became frustrated by the challenge of finding high-quality, affordable opals I could trust and the lack of access to education and resources to learn all things opal. Through years of trial and error, I have been able to create the resources I wish I had to learn how to cut opal. I’ve built direct relationships with Australian miners—including some from Discovery’s Outback Opal Hunters. During covid, I decided to take the leap and put myself out there and start selling opals. To my surprise, I sold my first opal in just 7 days! And it brings me great joy to see how much the business has grown since then, now selling jewellery and the courses I wish I had been able access when I first became interested in opal as a teen.
