Hi, I’m Steph — founder of The Good Opal Co.
While the company officially began in 2020, the journey started long before — born from a lifelong love of gemstones and the magic of Australian opal.
Growing up in Victoria, I spent my childhood collecting rocks and fossils — inspired by Jurassic Park and a fascination with the natural world.
In 2014, a neighbour gifted me a jar of Lightning Ridge opal chips, and that spark became an obsession. I began fossicking trips to Lightning Ridge, where I discovered the magic of black opal.
Over time, I built direct relationships with Australian miners — including some from Discovery’s Outback Opal Hunters — and taught myself how to cut and sell opal. What started as curiosity quickly became my calling.
Today, I’m proud to share not only opal jewellery but also courses and educational resources to help others experience the same joy I found.
